June 28th 2005

Hi, just to let you know I had my mobile phone stolen out of my bag on the weekend so until I get a new one there is no way to call me. I am still able to check voice mail though as whoever has it has left the sim in it for the time being.

Will try and write soon.

Thursday 16th June

Sorry it's been so long. I haven't been keeping my diary so I'll try and update today as best I can on the things that have been happening. I'm still living at the bed and breakfast in my sad little room (I was eventually moved). I've been having money troubles so extra curricular activities have been at a minimum (we get paid monthly and since I started at the beginning of the month I have to wait...) My working hours are 12-8 although I'm on a 2-8 this week as I have a Saturday shift even though I stupidly went into work on Monday at 12 and worked for 2 hours I wasn't supposed to. There are various roles to be done within my department at the hospital but at the moment I'm working upstairs, away from the patients, booking appointments over the phone. I'm sick to death of playing solitaire and reading trashy mags about b-grade english celebs who mean nothing to me. I am slowly going insane.

I've made a couple of friends but oddly we have nothing in common and I can't say I've meet anyone at work yet which I do have anything in common with. Some of them do tend to drink a lot but I don't much feel like drinking these days. The hangovers aren't worth it!

They had a social event last Friday with a 'school disco' theme that I got dragged along to. The first 15 minutes were a killer as I thought I'd end up standing in the corner by myself but things perked up and I got chatting to a few people. Luckily I had to leave to get the last tube home which prevented me from "drinking my way out of that mess" and making an idiot of myself. Although there were plenty of people to do that for me.

Some other points of interest from the past few weeks:
I saw some arabadabadoos (pet nickname - oh I may have failed to mention the hospital I work in is run by some Arabs) kissing with their noses which I thought was kinda cool but would be strange and awkward if you were forced to do it.

I've noticed the London 'freaks' are of an interesting breed. One old guy grabbed me my arm as I walked past him the other night and he turned around and gave me a huge grin. I don't know what that meant and you can only imagine the stories that started formulating in my brain. (I'm quite glad I hadn't watched the movie Fallen recently.)

The ticket lottery for the Live 8 concert has been running and if you haven't heard the lineup is the most incredible ever. I had a good feeling about winning tickets with a 1 in 28 chance of getting some but unfortunately I missed out even though my crappy boss managed to score some. I'm pretty gutted about this and prepared to pay £200 for a ticket if the chance comes up.

Beyond all this I've just been watching a bunch of TV. I'm now horribly addicted to Big Brother. Heaven forbid.

OoO the power just went off!

Hmm what else. I don't know when or if I'll be moving back to Shane's. As I've already illustrated his family don't talk well which leaves me totally in the daark. Will probably try and find a house this weekend a bit closer to town.

In the last few days I got offered that job I really wanted. They want a runner who after about 6 months they train as a junior editor. They basically make film trailers and have designed a good portion of famous movie posters. The catch however (there's always one) is that they've offered me £8000 less a year than I'm getting now and I just can't accept it with money so crap. It's seriously one of the worst pays I've come across so I'm rather shattered about all that.

Went to the pub the other night and apparently the English shows are true in that its pretty much a requirement to have a few beers after work every night before going home. Had an interesting day that day. Both Bryan Adams and Sophie Ellis Bextor had appointments which has since prompted me to go celebrity hunting in our database (I get seriously bored man). Lots of interesting people includ. Keanu, Kylie, Catherine Zeta Jones and a possible Michael Jackson.

Anyway as I was saying, at the pub afterwards I met a guy who's housemates are editors and he seemed quite keen to introduce me to them at some stage. There's still hope I guess.

Last night went to Nandos for some dinner with Shane and his catering mates. We managed to get through 2 whole chickens which was quite a feat and then I had to get to bed early for my 8am start at the hospital today (a bloody 8am on a Saturday is ludicrous). Shane kept me awake by putting on dvds and saying 'watch this bit, watch this bit' even though I'd seen them all before. (oh yeah I stayed at his house cos its so near work) and then had the craziest dreams ever.

So today is Saturday. I've just finished work, it's 32C (can you believe it) and I'm thinking about seeing a movie. Sorry this entry is so disjointed but it will give you an idea of my life at the moment.

Thursday 2nd June

Shops, shops. Oh, did I mention I haven't changed rooms yet? I haven't seen the guy for days and am wondering why he hasn't been demanding rent yet. Mysterious.

Anyway on the way to work some random decided to have-a-chat and he seemed harmless and told me I looked like a nurse. Heh. Turns out he'd just been to the Broadcast Show, being employed in Broadcasting and told me if I stopped by on Friday to meet him (he never said where or when though).

Another 30 seconds later I was slapping myself for not milking that contact (don't be filthy and interpret that as innuendo).

Another day of boredom with the highlight being getting to do some filing for an hour (God Forbid). I've decided to continue looking for video work which is about the only reason I can make it through the day in the hope it's only temporary. I've even been practising my resignation speech. I know that sounds horrible.

Tried to call this other chick who had been talking to me about a runner / editor position but found out she's on holidays so I hope this is the reason she hasn't called.

Shit, gotta run.

Wednesday 1st June

OK. I've just about had it with this website. It's just erased a whole entry and won't organise things in date order so you'll notice the days are all over the place.

ARGH

Anyway. Today found the Earls Court Exhibition Centre hosting the 3 day Broadcast Production Show. I registered a month ago and was certainly adamant not to miss it so I formulated a way to fit in two hours of it before work. It was great and simply drummed home for me even more how much I want to keep working in video. Filled my "show" bag with so much stuff to read I could barely carry it after. Scored a free subscription to one of the film mags I've been keen to read by being their first customer. Hooray. Snuck into a seminar on Runners in Production which I really should have paid £15 for (bugger that) which basically sucked and I felt like sobbing in the back corner because I had more experience than most people in the room and still can't get a job in media. In London of all places. (Note on this - the show wasn't really open to the public and I had to lie about my line of work and who I worked for to be able to register in the first place.)

Anyway it would have been great to stick around and muck about on the new editing systems but alas hospital life beckoned. Another day of virtually SFA. Nine hours later I got home, watched the final of the latest season of Despo Housewhores which, oh my god! (won't say anything because I believe we're ahead of Oz.) Resigned for the 4th time never to watch Big Brother again. But there was nothing else on!

Friday 27th May

Woke up early (4am text messages are evil) but I was too comfy to get up so I just had to listen to my phone go off every minute for about 5 hours. Have decided it will be difficult to get ready for work around here with roughly 30 people to one shower so it's lucky I don't start until 12. I may have to get used to having baths.

Found Jim who decided not to move me because a bigger better room is becoming available on Monday rather than the "shoebox" he had planned for me originally. He informed me it has a stereo too which he thought I might like all for the same cheaper rate and gave me a can opener as a present. Heh. And plus I get to sleep in a double bed for 4 nights. Hooray!

Walked up the road to check out the area and do some shopping. Hot today! It's a Jewish Orthodox area which I always dig cos I love seeing the guys all in black with their fancy hats, especially the younger ones. The women are always interesting too. It just feels like you're in a a whole different time and place. When I was walking home the Jewish primary schools must have finished as there were sweet little girls everywhere in the cutest little dresses. Anyway, had planned to see Catriona tonight but I never heard from her which is a bit of a shame as I'd have liked to have seen her but I imagine they're very tired after their long trip.

English Big Brother started tonight. Dear. I'm now firmly convinced they've stooped so low as to employ actors this time around. It's like they've found the most extreme archetypal representatives of the worst possible personality types and all they've done is scream at each other since they entered.

Tuesday 31st May

Well that's lovely. The website decided to erase this whole entry. Thanks.

Sunday 29th May

Lovin the posts. Keep em up and I promise I'll reply soon but its been quite difficult tracking down a computer and some time to update this thing and reply to messages.

Anyway I shall cast myself back to last Sunday. Caught up with Shano Von Shano first of all for a cup 'o' tea and headed for Picadilly so he coudl spend his hard earned pounds on some rubbish or other. Picked up a Count Duckula DVD for myself for #6 <-- (that's meant to be a pound sign but for some reason the symbols don't correspond with the keyboard) which shall be the start of my collection of British kids shows on DVD. (Worzel Gummidge, Catweazle and original Basil Brush on the waiting list.)

Went to a rather coll (but not quite as good as in Australia) version of Sushi Train. Genki desu. Shane had never had sushi before. Geezer. (That's me trying to be British.) Thought about catching a movie which I didn't realise until later that Shane was angling for Star Wars so it's lucky for me the cinema we foudn wasn't showing it. However, I am now inspired to catch some films this weekend (Cat Returns, Stander, Sin City). Sorry, I'm not writing that to be bornig but merely so I remember. See I can't even write a blog entry without chucking in a list.

I am horribly broke.
